The distinctive patterns formed when volcanic eruptions killed sea life, creating mud balls that dried and cracked. Minerals like calcite (yellow) and aragonite (brown) filled the cracks over millions of years, creating the dramatic geometric patterns. The gray matrix is limestone or bentonite clay.
